§ 29. Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Energy whether his Department has completely discarded the possibility of using in the United Kingdom the Canadian design heavy water reactor CANDU for electricity generation.
§ Mr. Norman LamontThe advice that I have received from the nuclear and electricity supply industries is that for the United Kingdom, the CANDU system does not offer any overall advantage as compared to alternative reactor systems. I am satisfied that it would not be in the interest of our nuclear power programme to have yet another change of direction in thermal reactor policy at this stage.
