HC Deb 04 December 1980 vol 995 cc159-60W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many independent establish

ments of further education there are in England; what subjects they teach; how many are considered efficient by his Department; and if he will list these.

Dr. Boyson

My right hon. and learned Friend is not able to offer an estimate of the total number of private establishments in England which provide further education or vocational training for students aged over 16 years but he currently recognises as efficient 149 independent further education establishments. I will send the hon. Member an up-to-date list.

Apart from those providing a variety of GCE courses, most establishments are highly specialised: subjects currently available in recognised establishments include English as a foreign language (over 100), drama and dance (15) arts and architecture (5), business studies and commerce (7) and wireless telegraphy (4).
