HC Deb 02 December 1980 vol 995 c119W
Mr. John Morris

asked the the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total number of redundancies declared in the Port Talbot travel-to-work area over the last 12 months; and how many new jobs have been created.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Between November 1979 and October 1980, around 11,200 redundancies were notified, not all of which have occurred or will necessarily take place in the future. Comprehensive information on the number of new jobs based on net changes in employment levels is not available below regional level, but as the right hon. and learned Member will be aware major employers in the travel-to-work area have recruited some hundreds of employees during this period.

Mr. John Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what new jobs there are in the pipeline over the next one, two, three four and five years, respectively, in the Port Talbot travel-to-work area: and in what field they are.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Our latest estimate is that projects for which selective financial assistance has been accepted or which will otherwise be undertaken in Government financed factories will give rise to 800 jobs over the next three or four years. Yearly estimates are not available. All these jobs are in manufacturing industry.
