HC Deb 02 December 1980 vol 995 c119W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he is satisfied with the state of the pig industry in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The June agricultural census results indicate an 8 per cent. decline in the pig breeding herd in Wales over the last year, although it shows an increase in the number of gilts not yet in pig but expected to be used for breeding. The move to positive monetary compensatory amounts has improved the competitive position and prospects of the pig industry in the United Kingdom as a whole.
