HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc349-50W
Mr. Hudson Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the most recent available figure for deficiencies in the numbers of teachers of mathematics and science subjects in Wales.

Mr. Michael Roberts

In January 1980 there were 60 vacancies for full-time permanent appointments in maintained secondary schools in mathematics and physical sciences, including physics, chemistry and combined or integrated science. Figures are not available for other science subjects.

Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what future arrangements he proposes for the training of teachers in Wales.

Mr. Michael Roberts

My right hon. Friend has no proposals at present to change the existing arrangements.

Miss Wright

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will estimate the present shortfall in Wales of qualified schoolteachers in mathematics, physics, chemistry and foreign languages; and if he will estimate what improvement or deterioration he expects in the next year.

Mr. Michael Roberts

The most recent relevant figures available relate to vacancies for full-time teachers in January 1980.

VACANCIES FOR FULL-TIME PERMANENT APPOINTMENTS IN MAINTAINED SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Subject Number of vacancies
Mathematics 30
Physics 11
Chemistry 10
Modern Languages 23

I cannot forecast the results of local education authorities' recruitment for these subjects in 1981.
