HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc448-9W
Mr. Charles Irving

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what policy or other reasons Stafford prison is overcrowded in comparison with other training prisons.

Mr. Brittan

Stafford is a Victorian prison and its cells, although designed for one prisoner, are larger than most of those in more modern training prisons. The services and facilities are adequate to support an overcrowded population.
