asked the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many short-time employees were working in Wales in June and July 1980; and what were the figures for the same period in 1979 and 1978;

(2) how many temporary weekly layoffs of employees there were in Wales during June and July 1980; and what were the figures for the same period in 1979 and 1978.

Comprehensive information is not available in the form requested. Information on the numbers of workers temporarily stopped on the day of the monthly unemployment count is published on a regular basis in theEmployment Gazette as is information on the incidence of short-time working among manual operatives in manufacturing industries. In addition, statistics are available on the numbers covered by the temporary short-time working compensation scheme which was introduced in April 1979. These are as follows:
