In January 1979, the latest date for which actual figures are currently available, the pupil population of maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in England was 8,348,000, compared with 8,454,000 in the previous year. The projected numbers for 1980 and 1981 are 8,178,000 and 7,963,000 respectively.
