asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many beds are available in each of the Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley area health authority areas for psychiatric patients; and what is the shortfall in each case.

The average daily number of available mental illness beds during the year ended 31 December 1978—the latest date for which information is available centrally—was as follows:

Rotherham area health authority 49
Doncaster area health authority 229
Barnsley area health authority 118
