HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc345-6W
Mr. Hudson Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the hostels available in Wales for the accommodation of mentally handicapped children, indicating the number of places in each; and whether he is satisfied with their number and geographical distribution.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

At 31 March 1979—the latest date for which full information is available—residential accommodation for mentally handicapped children provided by local authority social services departments was as follows:

No. of places
Clwyd
45 Tapley Avenue, Acton Park Estate, Wrexham 8
Dyfed NIL
Gwent
1 Crouch Close, Bettws, Newport 8
Gwynedd
Y Frondeg, Maeshyfryd, Maesincla, Caernarfon 10
Tan-y-Marian, Ffordd-y-Mela, Morfa'r Garreg, Pwllheli 4
Mid Glamorgan
Heol Persondy, Aberkenfig, Bridgend 25
Bryan Dar, Laburnum Drive, Cwmdare, Aberdare 16
Powys
Brongarth, Maen Du, Uplands, Brecon 9
South Glamorgan
Gladstone Road, Barry 25
West Glamorgan
Gladstone Road, Barry 25
West Glamorgan
Gwernaenon, Derwen Fawr, Blackpill, Swansea 14

The geographical distribution is not uniform, but I am satisfied that the local authorities, which are responsible for providing accommodation, are seeking to meet the needs of the children in their areas as the availability of resources permits.
