HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc378-9W
Mr. Warren

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will report on the current position and future meetings scheduled with the European Economic Community concerning the protection of the livelihood of United Kingdom inshore fishermen.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The Government have made clear the importance they attach to an early settlement of the revised common fisheries policy which adequately reflects the needs of the United Kingdom fishing industry as a whole. As my right hon. Friend reported to the House on 24 July, the last Fisheries Council on 21 July had a useful discussion of the outstanding issues and a further meeting has been scheduled on 29 September. Meanwhile, as announced in the House yesterday, the Government are making available additional finance to support the fishing industry.
