Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what was the total amount of United Kingdom exports to the European Economic Community during the last 12 months; what was the total amount of imports from the European Economic Community to the United Kingdom; and if he will list the top 10 commodities;

(2) what was the total of exports to the European Economic Community from Welsh manufacturers in the last 12 months for which figures are available.

The value of United Kingdom trade with the rest of the European Community in the 12 months to the end of June 1980 was: exports £20,169 million fob; imports £21,941 million cif.

The groups of commodities in which the value of this trade was highest were as follows:

Imports:

  • road vehicles
  • petroleum and petroleum products
  • iron and steel
  • meat and meat preparations
  • 389
  • machinery specialised for particular industries
  • general industrial machinery and equipment
  • non-ferrous metals
  • electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances
  • textile yarn and fabrics (including made-up articles)
  • miscellaneous manufactured articles

Exports:

  • petroleum and petroleum products
  • road vehicles
  • non-metallic mineral manufactures
  • organic chemicals
  • office machines and automatic data processing equipment
  • machinery specialised for particular industries
  • general industrial machinery and equipment miscellaneous manufactured articles
  • electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances
  • textile yarn and fabrics (including made-up articles).
