§ Mr. Marlowasked the Secretary of State for Energy what the proportion of labour and fuel in the costs of electricity generation has been for each of the last five years.
§ Mr. Norman LamontOn the basis of table 21 in its annual report and accounts for 1979–80, and comparable tables in previous reports, the following information is available for the CEGB:
§ Mr. Altonasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the privatisation of electricity production, particularly with regard to the maintenance of safety standards in nuclear installations.
459W
§ Mr. Norman LamontMy recent announcement about the proposed relaxation of the prohibition on supply or distribution of electricity as the main activity of a business other than an electricity board was a general statement of the Government's intention. I shall, of course, consult fully with interested parties before bringing forward specific proposals. There will be no relaxation of any of the consents, regulations or specific requirements placed upon nuclear installations.
§ Mr. Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy, under plans for the privatisation of electricity generation, whether it would be necessary for applicants to apply for the usual authorisations; and whether they would be free to build stations using the fuel of their choice including nuclear fuel.
§ Mr. Norman LamontI would expect the usual authorisations and consents to apply, but I shall be having consultations with interested parties before bringing forward my specific proposals. The construction of a power station to generate electricity for use wholly or mainly by persons other than the owner of the station requires my consent.
