asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many people were temporarily seconded to his Department from outside occupations in each of the last 10 years; and from what types of employment they came.

Mr. Channon

The number of people entering the Civil Service Department on temporary secondment from outside organisations in each of the last 10 years was as follows:

1970 9
1971 6
1972 3
1973 4
1974 2
1975 3
1976 2
1977 1
1978 5
1979 3

This total of 38 came from industry, overseas bodies—including EEC organisations—and academic institutions.

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many civil servants in his Department were seconded to outside occupations, in each of the last 10 years in order to broaden their experience and which specific types of employment were involved.

The number of civil servants seconded from the Civil Service Department to outside organisations in each of the past 10 years was as follows:

The total number of 24 was seconded to industry—including nationalised industry—and to overseas bodies—including EEC organisations.
