All secondments were from the National Health Service.

Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, how many civil servants in his Department were seconded to outside occupations, in each of the last 10 years in order to broaden their experience; and which specific types of employment were involved.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The information requested is as follows:

1970 2
1971 2
1972 3
1973 2
1974 4
1975 7
1976 7
1977 6
1978 6
1979 19

The majority of secondments were to the NHS, though the figures above include one secondment to a local authority, one to industry/commerce, and two to academic institutions. The figures exclude the larger number of officers who have undertaken short attachments with the NHS, and those who have undertaken assignments overseas, which have contributed to their career development.
