Mr. Dubs

asked the Minister of Transport how many people were temporarily seconded to his Department from outside occupations in each of the last 10 years; and from what types of employment they came.

Mr. Fowler

Information is readily available only for the last five years and in relation to the combined staff of the Department of the Environment (excluding the Property Services Agency) and my own Department. Since 1974, a total of 32 people have been seconded to the Departments from (a) industry and commerce, (b) local government and (c) research and academic institutions— 5 in 1975; 7 in 1976; 4 in 1977; 7 in 1978; 5 in 1979; and 4 so far this year.

asked the Minister of Transport how many civil servants in his Department were seconded to outside occupations, in each of the last 10 years in order to broaden their experience; and which specific types of employment were involved.

Information is readily available only for the last five years and in relation to the combined staff of the Department of the Environment (excluding the Property Services Agency) and my own Department. Since 1974, a total of 94 people have been seconded to gain outside experience in (a) industry and commerce, (b)local government (c) research and academic institutions, and (d) various other organisations (including Governments and international agencies overseas)— 17 in 1975; 15 in 1976; 11 in 1977; 23 in 1978; 24 in 1979; and 4 so far for this year.
