Mr. Dykes

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the total amount of financial assistance from public funds given to companies facing difficulties or for short- and long-term development purposes through the United Kingdom in the first six months of 1980.

Mr. David Mitchell

During the period in question offers of selective financial assistance under sections 7 and 8 of the Industry Act 1972 amounting to £69.9 million were accepted by companies in Great Britain.

The total excludes assistance given to firms in Northern Ireland, assistance to the aerospace and shipbuilding industries and assistance for research and development.

The corresponding figure for regional development grant for the first six months of 1980 is £164.2 million.
