asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many redundancies have been notified to his Department in the Irvine travel-to-work area since 1 January.

Some 680 workers have been involved in redundancies of 10 or more people notified to the Manpower Services Commission as likely to have occurred in the Irvine travel-to-work area since 1 January.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many redundancies have occurred in Scotland in the first half of the current year; how many of these were the result of bankruptcy or liquidation; and what estimates has been made of likely trends in the next 12 months.

Some 24,000 workers have been involved in redundancies of 10 or more people notified to the Manpower Services Commission as likely to have occurred in Scotland between 1 January and 30 June 1980. Information is not available on the number of redundancies resulting from bankruptcy or liquidation. It has not been the practice of this or previous Governments to publish estimates of likely trends in redundancies.
