HC Deb 06 August 1980 vol 990 c97W
Mr. Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will set out the quantities of (a) made-up carpeting and (b) carpet yarn imported into the United Kingdom for each of the last 12 months compared with the previous 12 months; and what were their countries of origin.

Mr. Parkinson

Overseas trade in carpet yarn is identified only to a limited extent, and the remaining information requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost. Details of imports of carpets, carpeting, rugs, mats and matting, including principal countries of consignment, are given in table III of the monthlyOverseas Trade Statistics of the United Kingdom under SITC (R2) subgroups 659.2–5 inclusive and items 659.61 and 62. Carpet yarn of continuous polyamide fibres is covered by a number of eight-digit tariff code numbers under item 651.41, but yarn of other materials for carpets is not separately distinguished. Copies of the Overseas Trade Statistics are in the Library.
