HC Deb 30 April 1980 vol 983 c576W
Mr Nichols Winterton

asked the Minister of Transport how many miles of motorway are due to be (a) started and (b) completed in 1980.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

I hope that work will start on nearly 25 miles of new motorway, including local authority schemes financed with 100 per cent. grants from my Department, and on the widening of 6½ miles of the M1.

About 40 miles of motorway should be opened in 1980, and the widening of 5½ miles of the M5 should be completed.
