HL Deb 30 April 1980 vol 408 c1384WA
Lord HOUGHTON of SOWERBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will call for an early report from the Farm Animals Welfare Council on the possibility of achieving an immediate and drastic curtailment of the long-distance transport of thousands of bull calves to Italy?

The MINISTER of STATE, MINISTRY of AGRICULTURE, FISHERIES and FOOD (Earl Ferrers)

The export of live food animals to Italy is permitted only by air. The Farm Animal Welfare Council has given its views to the Agriculture Ministers in the last few days on proposals for additional safeguards.
