HC Deb 29 April 1980 vol 983 cc429-30W
1. Dr. Mawhinney

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the Government's policy on smoking and health.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Cigarette smoking is the major cause of preventable disease and premature death in Britain.

While we recognise that whether to smoke or not is a matter for individual decision, it is our purpose, by alerting the public to the dangers of smoking and by taking other measures, to reduce the incidence of smoking-related disease.
