HL Deb 28 April 1980 vol 408 cc1123-4WA
Lord WESTBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is true that the telephone service supplied to members of Her Majesty's forces in married quarters is terminated between periods of occupancy of the quarters; and whether the service could be kept on permanent supply since many occupants reside in their quarters for a period shorter than the time taken for the service to be reconnected.

The MINISTER of STATE MINISTRY of DEFENCE (Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal)

Except where telephones are needed for a particular quarter because of the Serviceman's duties, obtaining a telephone for a married quarter is a matter between the occupant and the GPO. I understand that, where a telephone is already fitted, normal GPO practice when a quarter is unoccupied is simple disconnection, and reconnection can be carried out quickly if needed.
