HC Deb 24 April 1980 vol 983 c231W
27. Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons are entered in the electoral registers for England and Wales who attain the age of 18 years during the period of validity of the registers; and what action Her Majesty's Government are taking to ensure that all entitled persons are registered.

Mr. Brittan

We understand that about 536,000 such persons—approximately two-thirds of those eligible—are included in the 1980 electoral registers in England and Wales. Detailed figures will be given in an OPCS monitor to be published shortly.

In order to increase the rate of registration among this group of electors, we intend to pay special attention to them in the publicity which accompanies the annual registration process and in the redesigned version of form A.
