HC Deb 24 April 1980 vol 983 cc249-50W
Mr. Adley

asked the Lord Privy Seal what discussions he has had with other Governments concerning the 10,000 Cubans currently seeking sanctuary in the Peruvian Embassy in Havana; and if he will consider arranging for a token number of these refugees from the Castro dictatorship to come to settle in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Ridley

The Government of Peru have asked the United Kingdom, along with other countries, to consider accepting some of these refugees. The United States has made a similar request. The Government think it right to respond positively. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department will consider sympathetically applications from Cubans who have left the Peruvian Embassy for countries of first asylum and wish to resettle in the United Kingdom if they have ties with this country or other connections suggesting that the United Kingdom is the natural country of resettlement. We are also in touch with our European partners on this question.
