HC Deb 24 April 1980 vol 983 cc252-3W
Mr. John Carlisle

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether, following the Sports Council's report of multi-racial sports activities in South Africa, he will now consider giving public support to the forthcoming British Lions tour of South Africa.

Mr. Monro

I have been asked to reply.

The answer is " No ".

The Government's position on sports contacts with South Africa rests on the Commonwealth statement on apartheid in sport of 1977. We have indicated that we would be ready to seek changes in this as and when circumstances were right. The contents of the Sports Council's report do not affect the position materially and only serve to confirm the Government's own assessment of the present situation.
