§ Mr. Kilfedderasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) whether he will give an assurance that the centre for management education at the Ulster polytechnic will continue to receive adequate funds so as to enable it to perform 199W its role in the industrial regeneration of Ulster;
(2) if he will consider ways in which the Ulster polytechnic can be assisted with additional resources for management education so as to build on the success of management centre in winning a £24,000 award from the Foundation for Management Education.
§ Mr. GoodhartThe governors of the Ulster polytechnic are responsible for the conduct of the polytechnic and for planning its development within the financial limits laid down by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland.
The Government have no role in regard to the detailed internal organisation of the Ulster polytechnic or in decisions about the allocation of available resources between the various faculties and departments of the polytechnic. However, it has been and continues to be the policy of the governors to give as much support as possible to management education, and I understand that to this end they have recently undertaken a reorganisation and consolidation of the polytechnic's overall management education provision, which they believe will further strengthen the contribution which the polytechnic can make in this field. I cannot give an assurance that with the present limitation on public expenditure additional resources can be made available to the polytechnic for management education.
