HC Deb 23 April 1980 vol 983 c151W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Lord Privy Seal what funds have been provided by his Department to the National Water Council over the past five years for training students and trainees from developing countries; what plans he has to use the facilities of the National Water Council in the future; and what funds have been allocated for that purpose.

Mr. Neil Marten

No direct grants are provided by the Overseas Development Administration to the National Water Council for the training of students and trainees from developing countries, but the Council's overseas manpower development group at Newbury is reimbursed the cost of the training attachments made under the technical cooperation training programme. Total expenditure for the period 1975–1979 was some £50,000. In addition, the ODA reimburses the costs of NWC staff released for training assignments in developing countries: separate figures are not available.

No funds are specifically allocated for NWC training attachments. We expect the demand for training in the United Kingdom of water industry personnel to continue, but future numbers will relate to availability of finance and to priorities agreed with individual developing countries.
