HC Deb 21 April 1980 vol 983 cc4-5W
19. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of the many occasions when Sikhs have been stopped by the police for riding a motor cycle when wearing a turban but not a crash helmet, and with particular regard to the cases in Newham, he will issue a circular to chief constables drawing the attention of police forces to the provisions of the Motor-Cycle Crash-Helmets (Religious Exemption) Act 1976.

Mr. Brittan

No. Police forces are well aware of these provisions.

I have no reason to believe that police officers stop motor cyclists who are wearing turbans except to see whether a motoring or other offence has been committed.
