Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what are the proposed reductions in the number of civil servants employed in his Department; and what reductions so far have been carried out.

As a result of the outcome of the review of the size and cost of the Civil Service announced by the Lord President of the Council on 6 December 1979 and the 2½ per cent. reduction in manpower costs in 1980–81 announced by the Minister of State, Civil Service Department on 14 March it is proposed that the staff of my Department should re- duce by 640. Between 1 May 1979 and 1 April 1980 the staff in post in the Department reduced by 400.
