§ Mr. John Carlisleasked the Prime Minister whether she will now recommend to the appropriate Heads of Government involved in the Gleneagles agreement that further consultations take place to consider renewing sporting links with South Africa.
§ The Prime MinisterThe policy of this Government and of other Commonwealth Governments of discouraging sporting contacts with South Africa will continue in conformity with the Gleneagles agreement until South African policy towards multiracial sport changes sufficiently to warrant modification of the agreement. The Government recognise that progress has been made in South Africa towards integration in certain sports. But they do not consider that progress is yet sufficient to discuss with Commonwealth colleagues the possibility of modifying the Gleneagles agreement.
