asked the Minister for the Civil Service what have been the numbers of permanent secretaries, deputy secretaries, under secretaries, assistant secretaries, and principals employed in the Civil Service for each of the last 15 years, shown numerically as an index per 10,000 total civil servants.

The information for the grades named in relation to the non-industrial Home Civil Service as a whole is set out in the table below. Figures for 1 April 1980 are not yet available.

It is necessary for claims for expenses to be substantiated by some form of evidence that they have actually been incurred, but the Inland Revenue is prepared to be flexible over what constitutes evidence for this purpose.
