HC Deb 17 April 1980 vol 982 cc717-8W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if it is customary for Customs posts to close down on the Northern Ireland border with the Republic of Ireland during the funeral of Roman Catholic Irish Republican Army men.

Mr. Peter Rees

No.

Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the Newry-Dublin Road Customs post was closed on Good Friday following intimidation by the Irish Republican Army; and if he will ensure that this will not happen again.

Mr. Peter Rees

The day-to-day operation of Customs stations in Northern Ireland is, and must remain, a matter for the discretion of local management. It was judged appropriate to close the post at Newry for two hours on Good Friday.
