HC Deb 15 April 1980 vol 982 cc586-7W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his estimate of the cost of implementing the Flowers report recommendation to build a new dental school at Tooting to replace the Royal Dental School and a new dental school at St. Mary's.

Dr. Boyson

The plan to rebuild the Royal Dental Hospital School alongside St. George's Hospital at Tooting has existed for some years and accommodation for pre-clinical students at Tooting is already being occupied. The regional health authority plans to start the clinical building in 1982–83 at a building cost of £8.2 million at July 1979 prices, though no final approval has yet been given to the project.

It is not possible to give a realistic estimate of what the cost would be of transferring the Eastman Dental Hospital and the Institute of Dental Surgery to a site alongside St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, and of creating a new pre-clinical school. There is at present no firm proposal for such a development.
