HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 c534W
Miss Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what will be the definition of low income for purposes of exemption from the £2 fee proposed for sight testing.

Sir George Young

The definition will be the same as at present for other optical charges. That is, anybody who receives supplementary benefit or family income supplement or has qualified—because of low income—for free milk or prescriptions will be entitled automatically to full remission of charges. Also, anybody whose income is no more than £2.50 above the supplementary benefit level of weekly requirements will be entitled to full remission; and those whose income is slightly higher than this may qualify for partial remission.
