HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 cc496-7W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment on whose instruction, and under what byelaw or national law, the police in the Royal Parks generally, and in Hyde Park in particular, prevent teenage girls from skating on roller skates; on how many occasions they have done this; and for what reasons.

Mr. Monro

Activities which interfere with safety, comfort, or convenience of the public using a Royal park are prohibited by the Royal Parks Regulations, which are enforced by the Metropolitan Police in Hyde Park and the Royal Parks Constabulary in the other Royal parks. Roller skaters are stopped when their activities inconvenience, obstruct or endanger other visitors to the Park.

In the past month 19 people have been warned by the police for offences while roller skating in Hyde Park. No record is kept of the age or sex of those warned.
