§ Mr. ChannonOn 1 April 1979—the latest date for which information is at present available centrally—there were slightly more than 6,000 civil servants employed in the statistics divisions of Government Departments.
The total annual cost of these staff at average 1979–80 pay rates, including the items mentioned, is estimated to be about £60 million. This estimate does not cover the cost of computer usage, nor the cost of external field staff.
