Mr. Alexander

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many mentally handicapped patients at Balder-ton hospital absconded in the last 12 months including those who did so for a few hours only; what were the average and longest period of time that any patient has been missing; and whether there is an increase in the number of patients who have absconded in the past few years;

(2) how many patients have been sent to the Eastdale unit, at Balderton hospital; how many of those had to be sent back to their original place of detention, as not being suitable; and how many have committed (a) minor, and (b) violent crimes since their release, and had to be returned to prison, or other State institutions.
