HC Deb 02 April 1980 vol 982 c289W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many toxicologists there were in his Department on 1 April in each of the years 1970 to 1980.

Mr. Heseltine

Although the Department does not employ toxicologists as such, I have at present 20 people who are graduates in the chemical or biological sciences and whose duties centre on the assessment of the toxicity of chemicals in the environment. It is not possible to give yearly returns of staff in this subject area, but the figure I have given is regarded as fairly typical for the past decade.
