Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will give a percentage breakdown for both public and private sectors of those employed in (a) manufacturing industry and (b) non-manufacturing industry;

(2) what percentage of the United Kingdom work force is employed in (a) the public sector and (b) the private sector.

The latest available figures relate to mid-year 1978 and were given in the article "Employment in the public and private sectors 1961–1978" in the November 1979 issue ofEconomic Trends. The information requested is as follows:
