Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many beds were, or are, in the establishment of the Rochdale area health authority in 1950, 1960, 1970, 1975, 1978 and 1979; and how many in the same years there were at Birch Hill hospital.

The average daily number of available beds managed by the Rochdale area health authority in 1975 and 1978 was 1,023 and 954 respectively, and in the same years the number at Birch Hill hospital was 700 and 698 respectively. Information for the earlier years is not available centrally in the form requested and information for 1979 will not be available until 1980.
