HC Deb 30 October 1979 vol 972 c495W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if, in any new legislation introduced to amend or replace the Mental Health Act 1959, he will ensure that mentally handicapped people are treated separately.

Sir George Young

Following the White Paper issued last year on "Review of the Mental Health Act 1959", a number of differing views have been expressed by interested bodies on whether a revised Mental Health Act should include provision for the mentally handicapped as well as for the mentally ill. The Government have yet to come to a decision on this difficult issue but we shall take into account all the views expressed.
