HL Deb 29 November 1979 vol 403 c564WA
Lord BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What Britain's membership of the committee of five for the implementation of independence in South West Africa has achieved to date and what plans they have to speed their objective.

Lord CARRINGTON

Together with our Western partners and the UN Secretary General, Her Majesty's Government are working to implement the agreed plan to bring Namibia to independence in peace. Consultations were held recently in Geneva on a proposal for a demilitarised zone on Namibia's northern border, which we hope will provide the basis for an early solution to the problems holding up the arrival of the UN in Namibia and the start of the transition period.
