HC Deb 28 November 1979 vol 974 cc712-4W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the percentage increase in output per head in manufacturing between the first quarter of 1971 and the third quarter of 1979; and how much of the increase was due to (a) the reduction in the real exchange rate, (b) the increase in the money supply,(c) the lifting of restrictive practices and (d) co-operation between the Government and the trades unions.

Mr. Biffen

Figures for output per head in the third quarter of 1979 have not yet been published. They are, however, available for the first half of 1979. Output per person employed in manufacturing (seasonally adjusted) increased by 22 per cent. between the first quarter of 1971 and the first half of 1979. It is not possible to apportion this increase between the various factors mentioned in the hon. Member's question.
