§ Mr. van Straubenzeeasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what arrangements he is making to help 566W outstanding research students from overseas to attend British universities.
§ Mr. Mark CarlisleFollowing discussion with the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, the chairman of the UGC is writing today to universities notifying them of a scheme of assistance to overseas research students. Awards will be equivalent in value to the difference between the fee for a home research student and the fee which would normally be charged to the overseas research student. Selection, under arrangements to be made by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, will be purely on academic merit and research potential, irrespective of means, nationality or subject field. The intention is to enable outstanding students to contribute to British university research which has an international reputation. It is expected that some 400 to 500 students will be assisted in the first year beginning in September 1980.
