§ Mr. Wheelerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what research is currently being undertaken into the success of bail hostels and, in particular, the commission of further offences by those resident in bail hostels; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrittanA study was completed last year of the use which had been made of the bail hostels open during 1977. This showed that almost two-thirds of the persons admitted to bail hostels in that period satisfactorily completed their stay in the hostels. Further research is not currently being undertaken.
§ Mr. Wheelerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many bail hostel places are currently available in England and Wales; and if he has any plans to provide more places.
§ Mr. BrittanA total of 24 bail or combined bail and probation hostels is now in service with 360 places available for bail cases. A further 90 places are in various stages of preparation.
