HC Deb 26 November 1979 vol 974 cc470-1W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the latest available figures on the number of Iranian nationals in the United Kingdom; and how many of these are students.

Mr. Raison

I have been asked to reply.

Information in the form requested is not available. Figures for the number of Iranians given leave to enter the United Kingdom by purpose of journey, including those admitted as students, are published annually. The most recent figures are contained in "Control of Immigration Statistics 1978" (Cmnd. 7565). Other figures show that on 31 December 1978 there were 24,136 Iranians registered with the police. However, the requirement to register with the police is not normally imposed on those given leave to enter or remain for less than six months.
