asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the current arrangements for funding the work of the Hydrographer and in particular which of the civil departments are contributing to (a) Running costs (b) Capital costs, and what are the sums.

The MINISTER of STATE, MINISTRY of DEFENCE (Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal)

The total cost of the work of the Hydrographer of the Navy, which is about £10 million net per year, is currently borne by the Defence budget. Future arrangements for civil hydrography are under review.
