HL Deb 20 November 1979 vol 403 cc99-100WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How they ensure that a woman who is to be X-rayed at ports of entry is not pregnant when she does not speak any English.

Lord CULLEN of ASHBOURNE

An interpreter may be used if one is available, but staff at ports of entry have wide experience in communicating with those who do not speak English. At Heathrow Airport (the main port of entry for immigrants) inquiry as to whether a woman is pregnant is made both at the point of medical examination and at the X-ray point before a decision is taken.
