HC Deb 19 November 1979 vol 974 cc66-7W
49. Mr Lee

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent the rise in the tax and price index has been caused by price increases in the pipeline when he took office.

Mr. Eggar

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the effect on the tax and price index of price increases already in the pipeline at the time he took office.

Mr. Lawson

Since movements in the price component of the tax and price index reflect movements in the retail prices index, I refer the hon. Member to the Secretary of State for Trade's reply of 22 October to my hon. Friend the Member for Romford (Mr. Neubert)—[Vol. 972, c. 14].

50. Mr. Major

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the latest figure for the year-on-year increase in the tax and price index.

Mr. Lawson

The tax and price index in October was 14.8 per cent. higher than a year earlier.
